Let's Say Amen
Chava ...I mentioned you in my Shabbos shiur this past Shabbos, I ended my lecture with the story about you with your kids and how they shouted AMEN so beautifully it softened your heart and they didn't get punished! And in the same way, we can "soften G-d's heart" and nullify harsh decrees before the New Year. I just love that Amen book!

Taste Of Challah
Joel Salberg February 13, 2008
Shalom Tamar:
I just wanted to let you know that I did make and bake the no egg challah recipe. If I have not mentioned, the whole wheat challah are great! Delicious! Last week I tried the no egg challah and that was terrific. So, while I have a day off from my regular, part time job, I am making another batch of cinnamon/raisin challah using the no egg recipe. The dough is on the rise and I have to tend to it in a few minutes, however it appears as if these will be as good if not better than the first batch. Thank you again for the recipes.
Gratefully,
Joel

I want to tell you that I never baked as a child and when I got married I was determined to start. Well, I had a very good friend come over (who also happens to extremely gifted in the kitchen) and she showed me how to do it. Now, I tried, I tried different recipes, different methods, different flour and yeast- but it never came out right. It was an exhausting full day activity for me and nothing worked- yes, they occasionally looked very nice and sometimes they tasted ok, but it was never this eyeball protruding, wow- this challah is amazing good.
Recently we moved to a new community for outreach - my husband became the new Rabbi here. It's really a wonderful community and there is a lot of out-reach that can be done. Some women, in the community-who are not religious- welcomed me very graciously and my mother suggested that I bake them a challah in appreciation. Great idea. I set aside a day and did one of my recipes and they looked fine. However, the taste needed lots of work! I felt terrible- I already gave them each a beautiful challah, and they did compliment me, but I really thought, about how untasty my baked goods really are and it was an embarrassment to me. I decided then and there that I could not do it and will get by some other way.
Then, I decided to give it one more try. I took out your book (my mother in law bought me a signed copy before we moved). I studied it and followed the step by step approach. I have to tell you- it's wasn't just the best challah I ever made, it was the best challah I ever tasted! I've followed many recipes in the past, but what I like about your book is that it really helps you walk through the process, with tips I never knew, and ways to test if things are the way they are supposed to be.
So I want to thank you for doing a wonderful job- it is a beautiful book to look at and to use, I can't wait to try the rest of the recipes. Most importantly, I thank you for restoring my confidence in myself that I, with the right methods and a prayer, can actually do this.
Gotta go, my challah is almost done rising.
All the best,

I just wanted to let you all know that I have finally baruch Hashem, successfully made challah!
I used tamar ansh's cookbook, A taste of challah, as an excellent guide! Thank you Tamar Ansh for your help and guidance.
Yehudis, the kallah, who finally baruch Hashem, made challah.

Mrs. Ansh,
I love your book, btw. I have to say I was somewhat dubious to try
something new especially something that seemed to be a big patchke but
your method is the only way I bake challah now. I've been lazy and
gone back to my previous methods without a rolling pin and a knife
and I can see the difference.

I made your zucchini bread from the ou web site. It was soooo good! Too bad I'm going on a diet or I would make it all the time!

Hello,
I enjoy baking bread. I read with great interest your review of this new cookbook. I tried to buy through my local bookstore, but had no luck. I managed to order ir from the publisher.
I am not Jewish. This will be my second cookbook of kosher recipes. My other cookbook is The Mensch Chef by Mitchel Davis.
Thank you very much for writing about the challah cookbook.
Sincerely,

Hi. What hashgachah. I have been planning to write you for a week, but now is an even better time because I have been baking up a storm and can tell you what a great book you've got! I've made a lot of the recipes in the book, and I'm having a ball. I also made my water challah according to the directions you give in your Always Perfect No-Egg Challah, and the water challah was outstanding. Much better than usual. (I also baked it at 375 instead of 400). I have used some of your braiding ideas, and the challahs look much better, too. Last week I made 96 soft pretzels for mishloach manot, as well as calzones for a woman who broke her arm (and some for us, too!). Also, I made and froze the dijon bread for seudat Purim (my husband bought spelt flour instead of rye flour, so hopefully it will taste all right). And the onion strips are always a winner.
My copy of the book needs a new cover already; you should see what it looks like now, I've used it so much since I received it..

Dear Tamar,
I've been meaning to followup all my earlier messages - just to tell you how my children, grandchildren, and surrogate grandchild/kallah love your book. They are daring, not like their grandmother who finds something that works and is always afraid to try something new - so they've very happily trying. I just bought your Pesach book, A Taste of Tradition, which is now on sale - or maybe not - but it was in our favorite seforim store in back of us - so I bought it and that I will try. Your illustrations are breathtaking!

This cookbook is a great addition to any kitchen.
I've been making challah for over a decade, but since I started using Tamar Ansh's recipe
Ihave to make larger loaves - my family loves it that much. The book
features clear, step-by-step braiding instructions for a slew of different
challah's and rolls. For the rest of the week, there are fun and funky bread
recipes, and even a few spreads. Stories, tefillos and halachos infuse the
cookbook with meaning, while Tamar's chatty tone makes for an easy read. And the
pictures...you just wish they were edible.

I love this cookbook! The pictures and layout are so stunning it's a treat for the eyes. The personal anecdotes and stories included make you feel like you're chatting with the author in her kitchen. Best of all is the ease and the variety of the recipes, and the clear step-by-step braiding directions. I've been baking challah regularly for over a decade, and Ansh's basic challah recipe is the best and most fool-proof I've ever tried. My family and friends love it. And Ansh doesn't stop with challah - there are a plethora of breads and even a few spreads, all with easy, straightforward directions. Can't wait to try them all
Chava Dear Tamar, Yasher koach!! What a zechus to produce a book that inspires women to bake challah! What a zechus to produce a book that helps our Am say Amen properly!!

recipe
and tips this week and it was amazing. They looked absolutely stunning,
nicer than the bakery and my family tells me they were delicious!!!!
Raving
reviews. I have until now only been able to make one recipe and it was
good
not great and it never looked good! I also bought and gave your book to
Alan's distant "traditional" cousin who just got married at 41. I know
they
will appreciate and gain alot from it and it was a great gift for two
people
who already have established households. Take care! Debbie
Aviva Goldstein Hi Tamar,
Just to give you a great compliment. Yesterday i had company from England and i made your pizza. Everyone loved it,the taste was great ,but the presentation was amazing, it looked so pretty and everyone got to eat everything, yum. I always put on parve hot dogs also, like pepperoni pizza!
Then today I made the bobka. I've never made it before .... it was delicious. The dough was great. I put the cinamin filling in the regular bobke recipe and then sprinkled raisins on the cinamin and it is absolutely delicious. The instructions were also great, very clear and easy to follow. So thanks so much from us and our waistlines!

Rivka, Israel I really love your Pesach cookbook. I use it during the year too. I bought it two years ago but never got to use it then, so I put the book away. Last Pesach I took it out again and made two cakes receipes and the cakes came out PERFECT! I never had made successful Pesach cakes before. I tried other recipes too and they also came out good. The amazing thing was I was between chemo sessions and not feeling my best and the recipes were not hard at all where the previous year when I wasn't sick they seemed too hard...
Thanks again for such a nice book.
